A Hoosier cabinet is a type of cupboard popular in the early 20th century before the days of built in cabinets. The entire kitchen was combined within one piece of furniture.
A distinctive feature of a Hoosier cabinet was its accessories such as racks and other hardware to hold and organize spices and various staples. The most common accessories were a combination flour bin/sifter and a sugar bin.
It was also common to have cards on the back of the doors with such information as measurement conversions, sample menus and other helpful household hints. These types of cupboards received their identity because most of the companies manufacturing them were located in Indiana the “Hoosier” state.
